Fall Semester Breakdown

I only have one more year of generals before I can apply to pharmacy school!! Oh gosh, it can't come soon enough.

Here is what my schedule looks like:

Human Physiology with Rose
Medical Terminology with Salazar
Biochemistry with Sheridan
Anthropology with Peterson

I know it's only 12 credits, but I am fully expecting a rough semester. Human Physiology is probably one of the harder science classes you can take, and I'm really hoping this will get me noticed on my Pharmacy school application.

Hardest class?:
Human Physiology for sure.

Easiest class?:
Medical Terminology for sure.

Most enjoyable?:
I think I will really like Anthropology actually...Peterson is a lot like Bones and I'm completely enthralled by that show

Class I will study for the most?:
Human Phys...and then Biochemistry.

Class I will most likely be late for most often?:
Biochemistry on Mondays (that class starts 10 minutes after my Human Phys class gets out on Monday)

Bring on the semester!

I love you Mom!

Today is my mom's birthday!

I can't fully explain just how much this woman means to me.
She has taught me just about everything I know (with the exception of the OChem stuff...that's a little foreign to her).
She taught me that if I want something I have to work for it.
She taught me to pick myself up and keep going when I feel like I can't do it anymore.
She taught me about Christ and shows me daily how to be like Him.
She taught me how to love others unconditionally.
She taught me how to laugh when I felt like crying.
She taught me where to go when I am in need of comfort.

And SO much more.
I marvel every day that I was blessed to be her daughter and I will NEVER take that blessing for granted.

Happy birthday Mom!
I love you lots and lots and lots and lots!
Thank you for being my everything :)

I'm still alive!

Hello world! I have been a horribly awful blogger this year...but I am going to try to do better.

Summer has been nutso it seems like and now it's almost over...I just don't know how to handle this haha

Here's a quick rundown of what my life has been like as of late:

I am still working at Seasons of Hope in the billing department. We have undergone a lot of changes in the six months or so that I have been working there. It seems like just when I get a handle on how things work I get yanked into something else. It's a good thing I absolutely love the people I work with or I would have a total mental breakdown...good thing I work at a mental health agency huh?
I just finished my second week at a new position in the department. I am now the Psych Testing Coordinator! (Sounds super prestigious right?) When I was first approached about it I was super skeptical and not very excited because Psych Testing was always the one thing that seemed to baffle me the most, however, I have come to find that it's not completely impossible to figure out and it's pretty cool to share an office with the manager :) This means that I attend meetings almost every day...that is, until school starts up again. Then I'm going to have to learn how to cram 40 hours of work into 30. Oi! Wish me luck!
Oh, one more thing. Dr. Sommer is quite possibly one of the coolest people on the planet. Somewhere along the road to becoming a Clinical Psychologist he learned to read people REALLY well. Or maybe I'm just super easy to read...that's also a possibility. Anyway, he always seems to know when I'm really stressed and says things that make me feel much much better. Like the other day when he saw me waiting for a meeting to start and he said ratherly loudly, "Emma! We like the Emma. We have even talked about cloning the Emma!" Kinda weird, but it definitely helped relieve some of the bottled up stress I have been feeling as of late.

This summer has just been a learning experience. I started kinda dating a guy in May...ish. We weren't official and then some things happened and I "ran away" from the relationship. Much to my surprise, we went official in June. We had a lot of fun together and I learned a lot from him. He is a computer engineer and even though he really doesn't like biological sciences like I do, he was willing to discuss it with me. It felt nice to have someone to talk to on that kind of level. Gosh knows that hardly ever happens. He is a really great guy, but I guess just not for me. We broke it off a couple of weeks ago (if you couldn't tell by my use of the past tense in most of this paragraph) and it has been a weird transition for me. I've been through all the emotions I can think of, from sadness to anger. I hate that anger stage...but it's so difficult to avoid when you've had time to think over the way things happened. Oh well, in my heart of hearts I know this is for the best, but I still have lots of weak moments that are set off by the most random things and I HATE that the most. It just kinda sneaks up on me. I know in time things will pan out and I will stop avoiding things that remind me of him, but until then I will just continue to grin and bear it when people say things that they think are comforting (that's just the way it always goes right?)

But enough with this depressing stuff right? Yesterday I went to the concert on the quad with my roommates and met up with one of my very best friends. I tried to keep my mind occupied through the opening act...the music just wasn't my style and honestly I couldn't understand most of what the guy was singing. The guitarist was really talented though, I could tell that much! And then *dramatic pause* LINDSEY STIRLING was on! You remember, the hip-hop violinist that was on America's Got Talent? Yes, one and the same. I was in awe the entire time, no joke. Her renditions of The Lord of the Rings, River Flows in You, and Phantom of the Opera were phenomenal!
I think being a violinist myself made me appreciate it more than some others did. Unless you have tried to make those kinds of movements while playing you just don't get how hard it is. You have to be constantly aware of how much you're moving because if you move too suddenly your bow bounces and you get a horrible scratchy, bumpy, bleh sound. It was just awesome :)

Oh yeah, I was also called as the Second Counselor in the Relief Society Presidency at the start of the summer. It has been a real challenge trying to keep up with everything I am supposed to be doing, but it has also been a blessing. Of course, because the Second Counselor kind of oversees activities, all my dreams of getting away from planning the Relief Society Activities kinda went down the toilet, but it's fine. We played Water Balloon volleyball this week and even though only a few girls showed up, I count it as a success!

Oooo and indexing still rocks! I can never get enough. The Relief Society and Elder's Quorum are having a competition this month to see who can index the most. I keep hearing rumors about how a couple of guys have already indexed over a thousand names. I honestly don't know who will win. It could be really close! I know one other girl in the Relief Society is just about as big into indexing as I am and has set a goal of 2500 names this month. I just passed my goal, but I have a few more days, so I might as well keep going right?

Aaaaanyway this post is way too long and has a complete lack of pictures...I will work on that for next time. Until then, it has been nice to get some of my thoughts recorded somewhere other than my journal. (By the way, I'm still going strong in the whole journal writing thing! I don't remember the exact day, but it's over 1530 :)

Letter to Someone's Ancestor

Dear David,
I don't know why your name unveiled itself to me. It was just one of many on the page, and there are many others like me out there sitting in front of computer screens prayerfully trying to decipher a long ago census worker's cramped writing. Your name seemed funny to me at first, appearing as Dand. I quickly moved to the next name, but a quiet voice somewhere in the back of my mind whispered, "His name is David." I looked back, and instead of scribbled handwriting, I saw a clearly legible 'David' written there. I took a moment to ponder the significance of the moment. Perhaps your progeny has been searching for years to find your name. Perhaps you have been waiting a long time to be found. Perhaps your family just needed the one final push to break open your line. I don't know the real reason and I don't know the actual circumstance, but I do know that moments like this are what I live for. Stories like yours, even if they are only imagined, are the ones I long to finish. David, someday I hope to be able to meet you and shake your hand. Until then, I will be here- in front of a computer screen striving to finish more stories like yours.

With much love,
Emma-Leigh Owen

Spring Semester Outcome

So this semester was one big surprise for me. Nothing turned out like I thought it would and it just got busier and busier the further I got into it. I learned so much about myself this semester...but I'm glad it's over. :)

Here is my semester outcome (just a few days late...). My original answers are first and my actual answer is highlighted.

Class I Will Love the Most:
Organic Chemistry (If last semester is any indication it will be)

Ding ding ding! Organic Chemistry!

Class I Will Hate the Most:
Probably going to be a tie between Micro Lab and Anat and Phys Lab.

I went halfsies on this one. It was a tie between Microbiology and Anat and Phys Lab.

Class I Will Study the Most For:
Organic Chemistry and the lab...actually, I should probably be studying for all of these classes the most.

Just Organic Chemistry. I didn't really study for the lab...at all!

Best Class (in terms of grades):
Microbiology (Professor Winston said we have three take home exams and the final is in class, but the questions all come from the take home exams)

Organic Chemistry baby!! I'm still on cloud nine about that one :) This girl ended up with a 95%!

Worst Class (in terms of grades):
Organic Chemistry (just cause I love it doesn't means it's a walk in the park)

Microbiology. How ironic right? The class I thought I would do worst in I actually did best and and vice versa.

Number of Times I Will Be Late for A&P Because It's at 8:00 and on the Other Side of Campus and I Have to Walk if I Miss the Bus:
Hopefully not often, but I can definitely see myself being late :( uhhh...two, maybe three)

Ummm...I may have absolutely hated the TA that taught the Immunology chapters and decided that I would rather spend my morning studying for Organic a few times...so I missed that class about...well, let's just go with 6 times. But maybe it was only 5

I came...I saw...I just wanna take a nap

This semester has been so utterly busy...I just don't even know.

I just finished my last final and while I am so dang excited that summer is finally here...I am probably more nervous now than I was during my last test. I just have one more hour until that fateful time when I go and see how I did. OChem, please be nice!

Honestly, there hasn't been a whole lot of excitement in my life as of late. I wake up, go to class, go to work, go to class, go back to work, and come home and do homework. Then I go to sleep. The cycle is never-ending! I did manage to squeeze in a little bit of a social life in there (probably too MUCH social life. That will be determined by my final grades :P)

All I know for right now is that I am so excited for SUMMER!
Some friends and I are planning on starting it out with a bang :) Hopefully there will be many posts in the coming weeks seeing as I have been completely absent almost all semester.

Now, to spice up this boring post a little bit, here is a picture that I thoroughly enjoy:
Look how cute she is!!
This now makes me the one and only girl in my immediate family who has never been crowned some sort of royalty at a dance.
...I must have been too busy being a nerd *snort*

Over My Head

This last weekend I had the opportunity to go to Time Out for Women. Let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing. I will try to write a post entirely dedicated to that later, but for now I want to focus on one specific song that really stood out to me.

Jericho Road has always been one of my favorite groups. Imagine my face when I learned that they would be providing the musical entertainment for the very conference I would be attending *commence laughing*

I was so star-struck the whole time. I couldn't believe I was in the very same room as them. One song they sang was called Over My Head.

I'm in over my head
Right where I wanna be
I'm so lost within your love
The love that always covers me
So high, so deep, so wide
A strong and cleansing tide
My soul has found a place to rest
I'm in over my head

When they sang the words I'm in over my head at the beginning of the chorus I immediately felt as though the song would apply to me. I have been feeling so overwhelmed trying to balance work and school that I truly felt like I was drowning.

The next line threw me off. Right where I wanna be? No sir, I would much rather feel like I was in complete control of my life instead of like I'm losing control.

I'm so lost within your love, the love that covers me. Then I began to understand.

Since that moment I have remembered to thank God for all I have. I may be crazy insanely stressed out right now, but I have a job. Something millions of people don't. I have the opportunity to go to school and extend my education. Something millions and millions of people don't. I may not know where I'm going to live next semester, but I know that I will have somewhere to lay my head at night. So many people don't have that assurance.

So it's true, I'm in over my head, but I'm right where I wanna be. I'm so lost within His love...it's the love that covers me. My soul has found a place to rest.

I love the gospel.

What else could go wrong? Right?

This whole last week has been a headache for me.

Let me just start with explaining the events of my Organic Chemistry lab to you.
We showed up half an hour early because our professor told us it would take a long time to do the experiment...which it did. But it wasn't because of how long the reaction took.

Dr. Holman told us to skip a step and add a reagent directly to the round bottom flask instead of putting it and the alkyl halide in a separate flask. My lab partner and I made a mistake and assumed that meant we could put the alkyl halide into the round bottom flask as well. We added both and I stuck the cork down tight because the mixture was super volatile and I didn't want to lose any. I remembered the lab instructions said to mix it a little...so I started swirling it...then pandemonium erupted. Literally.

The reaction happened immediately, which is why we were supposed to add the alkyl halide when we were back at the bench. A lot of gas was being produced, so I had a momentary thought run through my mind This thing is going to explode! I tried to get the cork out, but I had stuck it down too tightly. I hurried back to my bench and got the cork out...which resulted in a geyser of Magnesium shards and iodine and the other liquidy reagents. I caught the brunt of it and the rest pretty much fell onto my binder or the bench top. My binder kinda makes it look like I killed someone.

I wish I could say that's all that went wrong with that experiment...but it's not.

We had to start over again, which didn't take too long. Everything was going pretty well until we had to put the round bottom in a hot water bath that was between 40-50 degrees celsius. Right as I turned the hot plate on Dr. Holman called all of us over to see someone else's reaction and what it should look like. We were over there for around five minutes or so I guess. When I came back, the water was boiling. BOILING! Crap, so I took it out of the water and prayed everything would work okay even if it was way too hot. Then I noticed the next thing...the reflux apparatus (double layed glass tube that cold water flows through) had not been turned on the whole time...so pretty much our product could have boiled and evaporated right out of the flask for all we knew...

Then we had to put a flask with water in it into an ice water bath. We did that and started answering questions in our lab report. Dr. Holman came over to talk to us and I swear, nothing went wrong until he looked at our flask. It exploded. I'm not kidding. The stinking thing shattered the second he laid eyes on it.

A kid in our lab thought it was super funny that his reaction was working and ours was going wrong and just about every turn. We thought it was funny when we still got product and he didn't. Suckaaa!

Oh yeah, and that night my car decided to give me a heart attack by almost dying while I was driving to my other lab. Then my phone decided to give my parents a heart attack when I called to tell them about it by losing service and then dying.

And that was just Tuesday! Oi

The rest of the week was just tiring with working 30 hours a week and trying to study for the A&P test on Wednesday (I may have skipped like 3 lectures because I can't understand the student teacher who was teaching us chapters 20 and 21...I learned my lesson. No more skipping class).

Anyway, the roommates and I have decided that every night Monday through Thursday we are going to the library when I get off work or out of lab and we are going to do homework and study. We don't study well at home and I'm afraid it's going to start showing on tests. This means that pretty much I will never be home. I will be there from 10 or so at night to 7:30 in the morning when I go to class or work depending on the day.

I can't wait until summer haha. I swear, I'm not complaining. I love my life and I wouldn't have it any other way, but it's taking some time to get used to this schedule.

A Day in the Life

Wow guys, I am officially 20 years old. It's seriously so weird for me to say that.
20 means I'm actually growing up...*shudder*

Yesterday was the most epically busy day of my life.

I had to be to work at 8:00, so that meant waking up early to get ready. Gotta look presentable on your birthday. It's a must.

I worked on an EOB from 8:00 until 12:30. Then I had to leave to go to cadaver lab *shudder*
I swear, the happiest day of my life will be when I don't have to go to anymore cadaver labs.
We are studying blood vessels, so we were poking and prodding veins and arteries. My lab instructor compared arteries to al dente macaroni noodles. Forever ruined my appetite for macaroni.
We also had to draw the veins and arteries on a life sized chalk outline. My group finished super fast. We don't care if we don't win the doughnut prize for the best one.

By 3:30 I was heading back to work. I worked on that same stinking EOB until 6:30 when I had to get going to Microbiology lab.

I'm afraid I was a little bit scatterbrained through the whole lab. All I wanted to do was go home. My lab partner was very nice and put up with my absent-mindedness. Sorry Kylie!

Finally, at 8:13 I walked through the doors of my apartment. Sarah had cleaned the living room. Best birthday present EVER! However, all traces of my roommates were gone! I felt so so alone at that moment.

Sarah and Janalee eventually reappeared and we finished out the night by watching CSI, a late Taco Bell run my request, and eating cobbler that Derek so kindly made for me.

This new work schedule just might be the death of me. Good thing it's worth it.

Also, I didn't take any pictures of the celebration because, honestly, there was no celebration. However, I do have this picture from awhile ago for you to enjoy...
I went to the Utah State hockey game with some friends and this was the entertainment during one of the breaks. Little kids playing hockey= awesome!
Pinky wasn't very happy to be there though.

Sorry for the totally random picture.

Reasons to not show up late to a movie night

This is what happens when you show up late to a movie night that YOU planned. And it's at YOUR house.

"John, you shoot him with the Nerf gun to distract him. Tim, you come at him from the front while I take him down from the back. Alex, you initiate the dog pile. Emma..." ~Ryan

"I got the video camera." ~Emma

"Good work." ~Ryan

We sat around waiting for Zach to show up for a good twenty minutes. You would think that after living with Ryan for so long he would realize that when you leave Ryan in a room filled with fellow mischievous people Ryan will then take charge and plan some sort of attack.

I love the part where Alex starts giving him a noogie. hahaha

Forever and Ever!

Well folks, it finally happened!

Brendan and Witney were finally sealed for time and eternity in the Logan Temple on February 18, 2012.

The last few days have been pretty hectic, but I honestly could not be happier. I truly believe there is no one in this world who is better for Brendan than Witney is and I'm so SO happy that he found her. She fits into our family so well and she is strong and faithful and diligent.

I just have a few pictures from the reception because I accidentally forgot my camera (and jacket!) in the car when Bren and Wit emerged from the temple. I guess I'll just have to steal those pictures from Maci or Mom.

Witney, I love you and welcome to the family at last. Thank you for making my brother so happy and for sticking with him through thick and thin. You amaze me.

Their reception was picnic themed, hence the little ants.
I seriously love the idea of a rice krispie cake!

The cross stitch I made for them of the Logan Temple.
The stitched the words to the chorus of their song in the border.
Did you find you were falling like I have been falling for you?
Were you counting the days before seeing my face?
Tell the truth, does love like this really just happen?
Baby, forgive me for asking, but how could it be that you wanted me?

Cutting the cake turned out to be a pretty big challenge.

Almost as big as trying to chew it.

No matter how happy we all were, by the end of the day I'm fairly certain we all felt a little like this:

And if not like that, then at least like this:

N8OT8O!

Today is Nate's birthday!

I seriously love my brother so much and everything he has done for me.

He has been such a fantastic role model for me and I look to him for strength a lot especially when I have been looking at the same Organic chemistry problem for like an hour and still can't figure out what to do.

Happy birthday Nathan! I love you and your cute little family so much!

Someday I hope I can follow in your footsteps :)

I got promoted and it feels so good!

Okay, so today was a new experience for me.
I walked away from my job as a Developmental Therapist for maybe the last time ever.

Don't you worry your pretty little minds, I have another job waiting for me, so it's not like I'm just going to sit around doing nothing.

On Tuesday I was approached about a promotion. I was extremely excited because I have been barely getting by on my paycheck, but then I heard these words, "We are looking to give you about 35 hours a week."

Oof.

I was fairly positive that there was NO WAY in the sam heck I was going to be able to squeeze in 35 hours to my already nightmare-ish schedule. I thought that this promotion was going to be...well, not happening.

Then the next day I was told that only 30 hours were required and my dreams opened up again. But then I got to thinking about the time I sat down to see if I could fit 30 hours into my schedule to be promoted to a DT2 and it just wasn't possible and I started thinking that this was still a little far fetched to be thinking about.

That night I sat down in front of an Excel spreadsheet and worked out my schedule. Don't ask me how, but 30 hours just opened up. I remember counting and recounting the hours for the other promotion...so how in the world was it working out now?

The answer is, I don't know. I am just thinking that this promotion is what I should be pursuing (even though it's still not what I want to do with the rest of my life).

So as of Monday I will be on the run from 8:00 in the morning to 8:00 in the evening as a Billing Assistant followed by studying...

I just might die.

Pray for me!

February is Nuts...

February is the shortest month of the year...so how in the world did my family manage to cram what seems like EVERY SINGLE important event into it?
(I only say that because I was born in February and I seem to have picked up a very narcissistic attitude from somewhere...)

February 9th: Nathan has his birthday. Granny would have been celebrating her birthday this day as well. Miss you Granny!

February 10th: Grandma Owen celebrates her birthday.

February 13th: Phoebe turns three.

February 15th: Rebecca has her birthday.

February 17th: Brendan and Witney have their reception.

February 18th: Bren and Wit will be sealed for TIME AND ETERNITY! Finally...

February 22nd: Little Grey turns 1! My how the year has flown...

February 23rd: I finally leave the desolate wasteland that is teenager-hood

(Also, I'm fairly certain that my grandpa on my mom's side was born somewhere in the middle of the month. Mom?)

Seriously, there's an average of one important event every 3.6 days or somewhere in that ballpark.

Thursday Thoughts

Here are just a few of the thoughts that have passed through my mind in the last couple of days:

"Making an epoxide out of an alcohol can't be that hard, right?"

"1335 a plague broke out in China. 1350, plague spread to Europe killing 25% of the population. 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue and spread small pox to the Native Americans, decimating their population..." (Important dates in Microbiology)

"Why is it already 1:00 in the morning?!"

"7:28?! *grumble grumble grumble*"

"That dude is such a creep!"

So...basically my life has been pretty absorbed with school and school work lately.

My eight o'clock class is killing me. I really try to leave my apartment by 7:30 so I can catch a bus to upper campus. I could totally walk, but I usually carry two textbooks with me along with 3 binders for all my classes and my backpack is super heavy, so stop judging my laziness! I have woken up at 7:28 twice in the last two weeks, so I've had to walk :P

Organic chemistry...is my favorite class. I am so enthralled by all the reactions we do. I am afraid I'm going to get behind though, just because there are zillions of reactions that I am trying to learn.

Also, that creep dude that I referred to earlier is seriously starting to weird me out. I have only seen him twice in my life, once a few months ago and once yesterday. He is this older middle age guy and both times I've seen him I have had to leave because he was constantly staring at me. I have never felt so unsafe! I really think I need to find some mace and carry it with me.

Oh, something kinda cool...I became an arbitrator in family search! I have been an indexer for a few months and I decided that it would be pretty cool to be an arbitrator. It took a little rooting around, but I finally did it. I can now go through and correct other people's mistakes, goodness knows I love doing that!

Also, I have been reading a book called Scarlett, which is the sequel to Gone with the Wind, and I'm loving it! I hated on Scarlett, the character, the whole way through the first book when it came to Rhett Butler because she was such a jerk face to him and everyone knows they are supposed to be together...and now in the second one Rhett has left her because of her obsession with Ashley and he refuses to take her back...but now the problem is that Scarlett is desperately in love with her so she has to try to win him back. It's stressing me out!

Aaaaanyway. That's pretty much been my life lately, and now I really need to go do laundry and make dinner and do some Retrosynthesis. :D

Unfortunate Truths of College Life (or Life in General)

1) Sometimes you're going to have to take the garbage out in order to throw something away because the garbage can is just too full.

2) Sometimes you're going to have to vacuum every other day in order to keep the amount of hair in the carpet at bay if you live with 4 other girls.

3) Sometimes you're going to have to do the dishes every day in order to keep them from mimicking Mount Everest.

4) Sometimes you're going to have to put your Harry Potter marathon on hold because you have an 8 o'clock class all the way on the other end of campus in order to avoid being late for said class.

5) Sometimes the toilet paper is going to run out while you're stranded...this leads to number 6.

6) Sometimes, because the toilet paper ran out on you, you will have to replace said toilet paper with a fresh roll in order to save your roommates the humiliation of having the same problem.

7) Sometimes you are going to have a big test the next day, so no matter how much you want to, you're just going to have to live without having a social life at least until tomorrow night.

8) Sometimes the toilet is going to get clogged and you're going to have to plunge it yourself in order to save the sanity of your roommate.

9) Sometimes you're going to have to go without buying groceries for a couple weeks in order to buy textbooks.

10) Sometimes you're going to have to grin and bear it when a guy you used to date decides he'd much rather date your roommate.

11) Sometimes you're going to have to have some alone time. This is okay.

12) Sometimes you're going to pray the managers don't cash your check until the next day at noon in order to save your bank account from being overdrawn.

and last but not least:

13) Sometimes you're going to have to read a section in a textbook 800 bazillion times because no matter how hard you try to study, something somewhere else is always going to look more interesting to you than the endocrine system.

In spite of it all, I love college :)

This semester will most likely be crazy!
I am only in 12 credits, but those 12 credits consist of:

Happy 1 year anniversary!

Seasons of Hope and I have officially been together for one year!

Man, it's been a whirlwind of a year....

It's been marked with some definite downers, but I have enjoyed if for the most part.
